Indian Army Physical and Medical Standards for Joining

The recruitment programme is published in local newspapers,one month prior to the conduct of the rally by the concerned Zonal Recruiting Offices. The process of screening and enrollment is as follows:-

  • Checking of documents
  • Physical fitness test
  • Physical measurement
  • Medical Exam
  • Written Exam
  • Preparation of merit list and allotment of arms and services
  • Enrollment & Dispatch of selected candidates to Training Centers

Physical Standards The country has been divided into six geographical regions to facilitate laying down of minimum physical standards for the various regions are : –

Region – Western Himalayan – Region Physical and Medical Standards

States – J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab , Hills (Area South and West of the Inter State Border between Himachal Pradesh and Punjab and North and East of Road of Mukerian Hoshiarpur, Garh Shankar and Ropar) Garhwal and Kumaon (Uttaranchal )

  • Soldier GD and Tradesmen :- Height – 166 Cms / Chest  – 77 Cms / Weight – 48 Kgs
  • Soldier Technical & Nursing Assistant :- Height – 163 Cms / Chest  – 77 Cms / Weight – 48 Kgs
  • Clerk/Store Keeper Technician  :- Height – 162 Cms / Chest  – 77 Cms / Weight – 50 Kgs

Region – Eastern Himalayan Region – Physical and Medical Standards

States –  Sikkim, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Assam and Hill Region of West Bengal (Darjeeling and Kalimpong Districts)

RT JCO  :- Height – 155 Cms / Chest – 77 Cms / Weight – 50 Kgs

Junior Commissioned Officer Catering/ Surveyor Auto Cartographer/ Havildar Education – As applicable to Soldier General Duty for various regions.

Dispensation In Physical Standards

  • Sons of Servicemen, Ex-Service-men, War Widow and Widow of Ex-Servicemen Height – 2 Cms / Chest – 1 Cms / Weight – 2 Kgs
  • Adopted Son/Son-in-Law of a War Widow, if she has no son – Height – 2 Cms / Chest – 1 Cms / Weight – 2 Kgs
  • Outstanding Sportsmen (National/State and those who represented District in State, College in University, Board Championship and earned 1st/2nd position) – Height – 2 Cms / Chest – 3 Cms / Weight – 5 Kgs
  • For candidates belong to chronically poor areas and those desirous of joining overage categories who are from families engaged in traditional profession. This relaxation may be given at the discretion of Branch Recruiting Offices, Zonal Recruiting Offices or Centre Commandants. – Height – Nil / Chest – Nil / Weight – 2 Kgs

Note: – An eligible candidate can be granted prescribed relaxations in all three measurements i.e. Height, Chest and Weight. However, he can not claim dispensations of more than one category, i.e. parental/sportsmen.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

To determine the Physical Fitness Tests (PFT), the following tests carrying 100 mks are held given as below

  • 1 Mile Run.
  • Pull Ups.
  • Balance.
  • 9 Feet Ditch.

1 Mile Run Marking system is as follows: –

  • 5. 40 Mins and below – 60 Marks.
  • 5. 41 Mins to 5.50 Mins – 48 Marks.
  • 5. 51 Mins to 6.05 Mins – 36 Marks.
  • 6. 06 Mins to 6.20 Mins – 24 Marks.
Pull Ups Marking system is as follows: –
  • 10 and above – 40 Marks.
  • 9 —— – 33 Marks.
  • 8 —— – 27 Marks.
  • 7 —— – 21 Marks.
  • 6 —— – 16 Marks.
  • Balance Marking system is as follows: – Should qualify and no marks are awarded.
  • 9 Feet Ditch Marking system is as follows: –Should qualify and no marks are awarded.

Physical & Medical Standards

  • A candidate should have robust physique and must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disease, effects of injury or disability likely to interfere with efficient performance of military duty.
  • Chest should be well developed having minimum 5 Cms expansion.
  • Should have normal hearing with each ear and good binocular vision in both eyes. He should be able to read 6/6 in distant vision chart with each eye. Colour vision should be CP-III ( able to recognize white, signal red and signal green colours correctly as shown by Martin’s Lantern at 1.5 mtrs)
  • Should have sufficient number of natural healthy gum and teeth The teeth should be in sound condition. In case of loss of teeth, the candidate must have 14 dental points out of maximum 22 points possible. However, well-fitted dentures are acceptable in lieu of sound teeth.
  • Should not have disease like deformity of bones, hydrocele and varicocle or piles.
  • Soldier (GD) for Infantry will have 6/6 eye sight.
  • HIV Screening during recruitment stage is being considered keeping in mind the angles of human rights & legal aspects.
  • There should be no abnormality in the X-ray chest and spine.
  • There should be no impediment of speech or malformation or abnormality of any part of the body
  • The candidate should be free from organic disease of the heart, blood vessels, lungs, digestive system or other surgical disability.
  • There should be no disease of the kidney and urine must be free from sugar and albumin.
  • There should be no disease of the skin.
  • Should have normal hearing with each ear and good binocular vision in both eyes. He should be able to read 6/6 in distant vision chart with each eye. Colour vision should be CP-III ( able to recognize white, signal red and signal green colours correctly as shown by Martin’s Lantern at 1.5 mtrs) There should be no disease of the eye, ear, nose and throat. The candidate should be able to hear forced whisper at 610 cm distance, Distant Vision in better eye must be 6/6 (corrected) and worse eye 6/18 (corrected), and myopia or hypermetropia of not more than 3.5 D in any one meridian. Colour vision should be defective safe and normal field of vision.

    Madam I want to know what is the medical required for Indian navy as artificial apprentice of 10+2 PCM main thing that is eyesight that is myopia limit

    I just want to know that if eye vision is 6/18 on both eyes and 1.5 D ; am i eligible for soldier GD infantry.
    Or can i operate LASER
